Sevalaya USA

 Sevalaya USA is a nonprofit organization that provides food, shelter, clothing and education to uplift impoverished children in Chennai, India. Poverty in this region of India is both widespread and generational, with a reported 40% of people under the poverty line in 2019. Since Sevalaya's founding in 2017, the organization has supported schools and orphanages across India, relying on the altruistic contributions of volunteers and donors to reach their goals.

 

With the goal of increasing awareness about their cause in the San Jose, Sunnyvale and Campbell areas in California and fundraising for the educational cause, the AltruWeb team partnered with Sevalaya in June 2023. We went door-to-door, collecting electronic waste (including laptops, TV sets, chargers, phones etc.) for disposal, requesting a small donation (around $10 - $15) in return. Through these community efforts, we raised a total of $135. Although we did not reach our goal of $200, we hope to amp our efforts and partner with Sevalaya USA again in the future.
