Connecting Causes and Charities to Communities
AltruWeb was founded in 2022 by Diya Mukherjee. While contributing to the Center for Infectious Disease Research of Zambia, she saw the need for books at a project that supported HIV-positive teen mothers. These teens often had to drop out of school to care for their children. Although the project was well-funded by international donors, the majority of the funding was targeted at medical, not educational, needs. Diya realized that within charities, prominent needs may receive ample funding, but smaller needs are often neglected (even though they are just as important) because of a lack of awareness, or because of restrictions attached to large grants. Working together with teammates Saahil Kajarekar (Director of Finance), Anaya Mandal (Secretary & Director of Outreach) and Amit Karoshi (Director of Media), Diya set out to address this problem by founding AltruWeb, a website specifically designed to attract smaller sources of funding to charities in need.
